Former Lt. Governor of Texas Ben Barnes

Ben Barnes was elected to the Texas House of Representatives when he was in his early 20s. From there he catapulted himself upward to become the youngest house speaker in Texas history. One-trick pony? Hardly, Barnes extended his influence beyond expectations.

Ben Barnes sits with political mentor Lyndon Baines Johnson.Barnes did not limit his involvement to just Texas politics.

Politician Ben Barnes ceased to be in the early 70s when he left office. Instead of resting on his laurels Barnes found success as a business executive and civic leader. For his entire life Barnes had been a leader, managing to win a seat in the Texas House of Representatives at the age of twenty-two. The leadership skills he picked up along the way were of great use in his second career: Business. The Ben Barnes Group, a business consulting and lobbying firm. He has served as a consultant, director or chairman of more than two dozen companies, including SBC, American Airlines, Dallas Bank and Trust, Grumman Systems Support Corporation, Laredo National Bank and the Barnes/Connally Partnership with former colleague and Texas Governor: John Connally.

Barnes has certainly been recognized for his achievements. In 1993 he became a Distinguished Alumnus at the University of Texas. Also in 1993 he was awarded the Ellis Island Congressional Medal of Honor. 1965 saw Ben Barnes recognized as one of the "Ten Outstanding Men in America" by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce. Barnes has also received two honorary law degrees from Texas Tech and McMurray University.
